Damson Picking in Ickwell

Damson Picking in Ickwell

120cm x 70cm
oil on canvas
September 2009

The stepladder creates an anchor in this painting
and acts as a devise for two people who are picking
Autumn fruits, in this case Damsons. The eye is drawn
to the bowl, held up supportively by the figure on
the right and filled by the figure balancing on the left.
By looking into the next layer we see the leaning
branches of the tree, which like the ladder, cut a very
decisive diagonal through the composition.
